Belgium was the first country in Europe to hold an equal pay day in 2005. The campaign brought the gender pay gap to the attention of public opinion and policy makers. Since then, Equal Pay Day has been held every year. The EEC`s legislation was clarified in 1975 by Directive 75/117/EEC on equal pay, which is mandatory and directly applicable. [14] This prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex with respect to payment; these and other directives were incorporated into a single directive in 2006 (2006/54/EC). [15] Equal pay is imposed by law in each of Canada`s fourteen legislative jurisdictions (ten provinces, three territories and the federal government). Note that federal laws apply only to employers in certain regulated sectors such as banks, broadcasters and airlines, to name a few. Most employers are subject to the legislation of each province or region concerned. Develop an action plan to address all issues related to equal pay. Effective action plans explain how to solve problems with clear timelines and why this is the fastest procedure. Civil society organizations often participate in awareness campaigns such as the annual Equal Pay Day. While men and women may demand equal pay, we refer to a woman who claims the same salary for simplicity and reflects the fact that most complainants are women. An audit is the simplest and most effective way to check if you have a problem with equal pay.
In 2017, the Icelandic government decided to add an amendment to the Equality and Gender Equality Act 2008 (#10/2008). [19] The amendment is a law on the certification of equal pay and came into force on 1 January 2018. [19] Under the amendment, companies and institutions that employ 25 or more employees per year will be required to obtain equal pay certification for their equal pay system and implementation. This mandatory certification is intended to enforce existing legislation, which prohibits discriminatory practices based on sex and requires women and men working for the same employer to receive equal wages and equivalent conditions of employment for equal or equivalent jobs. [23] It is important to ensure equal pay in order to comply with the law by identifying, explaining and eliminating unjustified pay gaps and contributing to a fairer society in which everyone has equal opportunities. Taiwan passed the Gender Equality in Employment Act in 2002. [51] It provides that an employer must pay the same salary to workers who do the same work. The law requires that employers not be allowed to discriminate against workers on the basis of their gender or sexual orientation when they pay wages. Workers receive equal pay for equal work or equal value. However, if these differences are the result of seniority systems, performance and discipline systems, benefit systems or other justified reasons for non-sexual or non-sexual orientations, the above restriction does not apply. Employers should not use methods of reducing the wages of other workers to evade the provisions of the previous paragraph.
The law of equality between women and men is governed by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) Act 2010 on the Equal Pay Code of Conduct. The first attempt at equal pay legislation in the United States, H.R. 5056, „Prohibiting Discrimination in Pay on Account of Sex,” was introduced by MP Winifred C.
