One of the most significant changes for the sector is the move to a new funding model for the NHP, which will extend funding for psychiatric services by three years. Each year, the aid shall be extended for a further year if the NHF fulfils the agreed performance criteria. This will provide three years of financial security and benefit municipal mental health agencies as they will no longer have to re-apply for services each year. The new NHP funding model and the longer-term approach to tendering is a welcome change. As The chair of the National Mental Health Commission, Lucy Brogden, put it, one-year contracts „are simply not a good way to work.” The Minister said the new funding process would improve the ability of PHENs to ensure services can be ordered well in advance and to ensure longer-term funding security for the sector. Minister Hunt announced that the 31 NHPs will share $1.45 billion over the next three years to sponsor psychiatric services. The breakdown of funds understands that the short-term nature of funding contracts has been regularly addressed as an issue by QAMH members, particularly in rural and remote areas, where there are additional challenges in providing services and recruiting staff.
